Work Ethic Summer Academy

High School Students – Earn a Work Ethic Certification in Just Two Weeks

Logo with a blue gear-shaped border and the words "Mike Rowe Works Foundation" in bold, highlighting "Works" across the center—emphasizing support for AI-proof careers.

This summer, the School of Skilled Trades is opening its doors to local teens for a hands-on, skill development and resume-building experience.

During this two-week experience, students will:

– Earn a nationally recognized work ethic certification through the mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s SWEAT Pledge curriculum – we are the only school in North Carolina authorized to deliver this program!

– Gain hands-on experience in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and automotive systems—skills you can use immediately on the job or in future training programs.

What Students Will Do

In the Classroom: Students complete the Mike Rowe Foundation SWEAT Pledge curriculum — a nationally respected work ethic training program built around the principles that separate people who get hired and keep jobs from those who don’t. Students who complete the program earn a Work Ethic Certification they can put on any job application or resume. This is a significant differentiator!

In the Lab: Students roll up their sleeves and learn trade skills that homeowners and employers pay good money for like:
-Replace a toilet
-Repair a leaky faucet
-Install a light fixture
-Swap out an electrical outlet
…and more
No experience required. Our licensed instructors guide every step.

Why It Matters

Skilled trades workers are in the highest demand they’ve been in a generation. Plumbers, HVAC techs, electricians, and maintenance technicians in North Carolina earn between $45,000 and $85,000 per year — without a four-year degree. This program gives teens a first look at that path before they ever have to choose it.

But even for students who go a different direction, the work ethic training is universally valuable. Showing up on time, taking initiative, doing the job right, and being someone an employer can count on — those are skills every teen needs, whatever path they eventually follow.
